Staying at 1 Orchard St.
Useful information for staying at No.1
Keys
There is a set of keys to the property which have been split between two separate key safes with different codes (thus allowing e.g. window cleaner to access the rear only):
- Alley door (mortice lock) – located in a key safe attached to the wrought iron gate by the front door
- Front door (Yale type) – located in a wall-mounted safe in the rear yard, so to reach this you will need to first obtain the alley door key
If using both keys please attach them together whilst staying, and ensure they are returned to their respective safes when leaving.
Connecting to wi-fi
Internet access via wi-fi is available. The connection details are displayed on the pinboard in the kitchen, along with a QR code that makes it easier to connect mobile devices without needing to enter any details.

Heating & hot water
The central heating is gas-fired and controlled by the living room thermostat. Hot water to the sinks and bath taps is also heated by the gas boiler in ‘on-demand’ mode.

Rubbish
Bin collections are done on Friday morning. We have two wheelie-bins, black for general rubbish and blue for recycling (more information from W.Suffolk Council on what goes in what). Our neighbours use our alleyway to get their bins out to the street on Thursday – they have told us they will put ours out too when we’re not there but after short visits we usually try to take any rubbish home with us.
Alleyway
The side alley is part of No. 1 freehold, but access is shared with both neighbouring properties. A key to the alley door is in a key safe outside (see above). There is also a door directly to the alley from the hall, but we tend not to use this – if for any reason you do need to open it the key is kept in the lock on the inside.
A large stepladder is kept on the wall if needed (a smaller ladder is also kept in the cellar).
Although the alleyway should be kept clear, our neighbour Helen from 2 doors away at No. 15 Short Brackland parks her mobility scooter their with our permission. It can be rolled out of the way if needed.
Device charging
There are several options available for charging portable devices. In the sitting room there is a charger adaptor with 2 USB-A & 2 USB-C sockets. The bedrooms have bedside wireless (Qi) chargers as well as wall chargers, and the living room also has a multi-purpose charger (plugged in underneath the window) that will power/charge phones, tablets and even most laptops with USB-C connection.
There is an international mains power adaptor (found either in the main bedroom wall socket or in one of the drawers nearby). This will also accept shaver/razor chargers (the bathrooms do not have shaver sockets).
